Grafs Erfolgsbuch "Wir sind Gefangene" (1927) wurde bereits ein Jahr nach Erscheinen in Amerika als repräsentatives Nachkriegswerk überSetzt.<br>Der Autor suchte seinen Weg durch ein zerstörerisches Jahrhundert – pazifistisch, authentisch und widersprüchlich. Sein spontaner Protest gegen die Bücher- verbrennung vom 10. Mai 1933 wurde weltweit gelesen: "Ein verjagter Dichter, einer der Besten", urteilte Bertolt Brecht. Im US-Exil war er einer der Wortführer der aus Deutschland vertriebenen Autoren.
