Han debuterade med diktsamlingen Vårbris 1900. Utöver lyrik skrev han även betydelsefulla essä- och aforismsamlingar. Ekelund tilldelades tilldelades Samfundet De Nios Stora Pris två gånger och 1937 blev han hedersdoktor vid Lunds universitet.
