Han blev uddannet på Kunstakademiet i København og arbejdede flittigt med både keramik, porcelæn og portrættegning, men det er velsagtens hans bøger om Danmark og hans deltagelse i Danmarks-ekspeditionen til Grønlands Nordøstkyst i 1906-1908 samt hans dokumentation deraf, som han er bedst kendt for. Han har selv været med til at illustrere sine bøger om Danmarks geografi og befolkning og har modtaget "Fortjenstmedaljen i sølv".
