Novellen ingår även i samlingen Den svarta katten och andra noveller. <br><br>EDGAR ALLAN POE föddes i Boston 1809. Efter korta försök inom universitetsvärlden och militären blev han biträdande redaktör för Southern Literary Messenger i Richmond och började verka som litteraturkritiker och författare. Romanen Arthur Gordon Pyms äventyr från 1838 mötte ingen större uppskattning; det var i novellerna som hans sällsamma senromantiska stil verkligen kom till sin rätt. Han avled i Baltimore år 1849.
