Hans forfatterskab hører til samtidens allermest omfangsrige og spænder fra roman og drama til debat- og personhistoriske værker. Rosenkrantz slog dog især igennem som dansk pioner inden for krimigenren og udgav i alt godt et dusin romaner og tre novellesamlinger i genren. Siden 1987 har Det Danske Kriminalakademi årligt uddelt en "Palle Rosenkrantz-pris" til indstillede kandidater.
