Unterwegs treffen sie auf eine Frau, die von Bluthunden gejagt wird. Um die Frau - Fatima Marryah - zu retten, erschießt Kara Ben Nemsi die Bestien, die Schir Seleki, der Häuptling der Mir Mahmalli, losgehetzt hat. Letzterer verlangt Schadensersatz und dazu Waffen und Pferde der Protagonisten, muß sich aber damit begnügen, außer ein paar Pferden keine weiteren Verluste zu erleiden.
