Den samfundssatiriske science fiction-roman "De sindssyges klode" er Mogens Klitgaards første roman. Den blev til under hans ophold på Boserup Sanatorium i 1933, hvor han var indlagt med tuberkulose, men den blev først udgivet godt tyve år efter hans død. Mogens Klitgaard (1906-1945) mistede sine forældre som helt lille dreng og blev derefter sendt til Det Kongelige Opfostringshus på Østerbro. Han kom senere i lære som gartner, men udlængslen fik ham til at forlade sin læreplads, og de næste ti år rejste han rundt i Europa som vagabond. Hans omflakkende tilværelse fik en ende, da han blev indlagt på Boserup Sanatorium med tuberkulose. Det var på den tid, han begyndte at skrive. Han fik sit gennembrud i 1937 og nåede at få udgivet seks romaner inden sin død i 1945.
