De hoofdpersoon is David Holm, een boosaardige dronkaard, die zijn hele leven de mensen die van hem houden slecht heeft behandeld. Een aantal seconden voor middernacht op een oudejaarsavond valt hij dood neer als gevolg van een gevecht met een paar andere dronkaards. Volgens de christelijke legende is de zondaar die op oudjaarsnacht sterft veroordeeld om het rijtuig van de dood het komende jaar te besturen. Een jaar lang rijdt Holm rond, zielen van stervenden ophalen.<br><br>Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) was een Zweedse auteur en ontving de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur in 1909. Lagerlöf schreef een groot aantal romans en korte verhalen waarin de natuur, de mensen en het thuis terugkerende thema's zijn.
