De ascendencia noble, se la considera una de las escritoras pioneras de las letras españolas y precursora de la lucha de los derechos de las mujeres en la España de su época. Entre su dilatada obra se cuenta la primera novela naturalista española, La Tribuna, amén de artículos periodísticos, ensayos y libros de viajes.
