Se le considera uno de los mayores exponentes de las letras hispanas de toda la historia, sobre todo por su vertiente poética, aunque también cultivó la prosa, el teatro y materias como la filosofía. Es célebre su enemistad literaria con el también poeta Luis de Góngora, enfrentamiento que dio fruto a algunas de sus obras más destacadas.
