Han blev født i meget små kår på et midtjysk husmandssted, i et hjem stærkt præget af et indremissionsk sortsyn. Flyttede senere til København for at realisere drømmen om at blive forfatter. Trods hurtig succes med dette levede han ofte i fattigdom. Desuden led han af fobier og forfølgelsesvanvid, og i de sidste 8-9 år af sit liv isolerede han sig mere og mere, indtil han tog sit eget liv.
