MAKSIM GORKIJ [1868–1936], egentligen Aleksej Maksimovitj Pesjkov, född i Nizjnij Novgorod, hör till den ryska litteraturens största namn. Gorkijs ungdom märktes av fattigdom och han blev tidigt föräldralös. Som kökspojke på en Volgaångare lärde han sig läsa och skriva – läsningen beskrev han senare som sin räddning. 1898 kom första bokutgivningen, Berättelser, i två band, som gjorde succé. Maksim Gorkij kom snart att betraktas som en av de stora ryska författarna, vid sidan av Leo Tolstoj och Anton Tjechov. Han dog 1936 under oklara omständigheter i Josef Stalins Sovjetunionen.
