Hun begyndte som tjenestepige i København, men var forfærdet over de slavelignende og uretfærdige forhold, som tyendet i Danmark arbejde under, og stiftede i 1899 Københavns Tjenestepigeforening. Marie Christensen udgav sine erindringer i 1942.
