Nato a Siena nel 1882 e morto a Roma nel 1920. lo scrittore fu riscoperto dal grande pubblico molto tardi, dal 1962 al 2000 da scrittori e critici come Carlo Cassola, Giuseppe de Robertis, Enrico Falqui, Carlo Bo, Alberto Asor Rosa ed altri. Questa recente critica ha capovolto la visione di un Tozzi realista proponendolo come scrittore di stampo profondamente psicologico e vicino al simbolismo, paragonandolo a livello europeo alla prosa di Kafka e Dostoevskij.
