Mainetta oli kertynyt myös hevosmiehenä ja korttisahurina. Janne ja Santeri jäivät pian kiinni rikoksestaan. Heidät tuomittiin kuolemaan, mutta tarina ei suinkaan pääty siihen. Ajan tavan mukaan kuolemantuomio muutettiin karkotukseksi Siperiaan, ja matkalla sinne Janne karkasi ja päätyi lopulta Amerikkaan. Tapani Baggen pienoisromaanissa kasvinkumppani ja rikostoveri Santeri Marianpoika kertoo Jannen vaiheikkaan tarinan Jannen oman laulun säestyksellä.
