Sui Sin Far (pseudonym for Edith Maude Eaton, 1865-1914) er intet mindre end historiens første asiatisk-amerikanske forfatter. Hendes historier beskriver livet blandt kinesiske immigranter i Canada og USA. Det gennemgående tema er, hvordan man finder sig til rette mellem to kulturer - den amerikanske og den kinesiske. Sui Sin Far skrev ganske enkelt for at skabe mellemmenneskelig forståelse. Foruden et udvalg på ni noveller rummer I de fries land det selvbiografiske essay Blade fra en eurasiers mentale portfolio fra 1909, hvori Sui Sin Far beskriver sine egne oplevelser med racisme og fordomme. Essayet står endnu den dag i dag som en af amerikansk litteraturs stærkeste og skarpeste vidnesbyrd om det vanskelige i at skabe og opretholde en flerkulturel identitet. Det er første gang, Sui Sin Fars tekster oversættes til dansk. Med indledning af historiker Mara Cherkasky.
