Inkerinsuomalainen Niina Väärä syntyi Neuvosto-Venäjälle kesällä 1930. Kahdeksanhenkisen perheen kuopuksen elämästä kehkeytyi monivaiheinen selviytymistarina. Niina menetti kuusivuotiaana äitinsä onnettomuudessa ja isä kuoli kolmea vuotta myöhemmin, kun neuvostolääkäri ei suostunut hoitamaan suomalaista miestä. Hautajaisväki piti parempana, että kuolema olisi korjannut orvon tytönkin. Toisessa maailmansodassa Niina ehti joutui useaan kertaan sodan silmään saksalaisten ja puna-armeijan rintamalinjojen vyöryessä yli, eivätkä koettelemukset loppuneet sotaan: Stalinin hallitsemaan Neuvosto-Viroon joutuneesta orpotytöstä tuli 12-vuotiaana lapsiorja, ja syntyperän vuoksi hänen passiinsa lyötiin leima "kansan vihollinen". Olli Pirhosen muistiin kirjaamat muistelmat hätkähdyttävät ja liikuttavat. Niiden ytimessä on Niina Väärän järkkymätön halu selviytyä ja "kasvaa kunnon ihmiseksi".
