In Leonhard Franks Heimkehrer-Erzählung „Karl und Anna“ (1927) ist es die Liebe, die über die Grausamkeit des Krieges siegt und die Hoffnung auf eine neue, bessere Welt aufrechterhält. Die Erzählung war ein großer Erfolg und wurde vom Autor für die Bühne adaptiert.
