De vier leden van het strijkkwartet dat op gezette tijden samen musiceert weten het ook. Alle vier zijn ze op verschillende manieren beschadigd door het leven, maar in de muziek vinden ze afleiding, troost, ja soms zelfs iets van verheffing. Aan dat alles lijkt ruw een einde te komen wanneer een repetitie op de woonboot van een van de leden met grof geweld verstoord wordt door een levensgevaarlijke indringer.
