Den publicerades i en sovjetisk tidskrift 1924 och ingick i den ursprungliga novellsamlingen Berättelser från Odessa från 1931. Samlingen har på senare år ofta kommit att inkludera även andra av Isaac Babels noveller som utspelar sig i trakterna kring Odessa. Babels noveller återger ofta judiskt liv och judiska livsöden. ISAAK BABEL [1894–1940] var en sovjetisk författare, född i den ukrainska staden Odessa. Hans mest berömda verk är novellsamlingarna Berättelser från Odessa och Ryttararmén, båda utgivna i bokform första gången 1926. Babel tillfångatogs av Stalins säkerhetstjänst 1939 och avrättades 1940.
