Marcus Aurelius (121-180) geldt, naast zijn voorgangers Augustus en Trajanus, als een modelkeizer. Hij zou de laatste 'goede' vorst zijn geweest; met het keizerschap van zijn zoon Commodus trad volgens de traditie het verval in. Dit beeld leeft tot in onze dagen voort en zien we terug in bijvoorbeeld de blockbuster Gladiator (2000). Marcus Aurelius was echter een man met twee gezichten: behalve nobele vorst was hij ook een pragmatisch heerser die verantwoordelijk was voor brute christenvervolgingen. Zijn meedogenloze optreden tegen de barbaren in Midden-Europa zou hem tegenwoordig voor het Internationaal Strafhof in Den Haag brengen. Anton van Hooff schetst niet alleen de diverse kanten van keizer Marcus' persoon, maar plaatst hem in het cultuurpatroon van zijn tijd. Aurelius draagt de tegenstellingen van zijn tijd in zich, de tijd waarin oud-Romeinse waarden botsen met toenemende vergeestelijking.
