Hijo de familia noble proveniente de Vizcaya, vivió de las riquezas de su familia hasta alistarse en el ejército, donde hizo carrera. Tras una vida de venturas y escándalos, falleció a causa del impacto de una granada durante el asedio de Gibraltar por parte del ejército inglés. Dejó, sin embargo, una obra literaria y poética de gran calado, por la que aún hoy en día se le recuerda.
