Hän syntyi Bergenissä, mutta asui osan elämästään Yhdysvalloissa. Janson opiskeli teologiaa Oslon yliopistossa, ja monissa Jansonin teoksissa onkin kristillistä tematiikkaa. Janson oli unitarismin kannattaja. Unitarismissa uskotaan, että Jumalalla on kolminaisuusopin sijaan vain yksi persoona.
