I denne roman om store forandringer og tidsåndens romantiske forlis tematiseres fantasiens forgreninger og faldgruber og byder på en radikalt ny forståelse af forholdet mellem fantasi og virkelighed.<br><br>Hans Egede Schack, 1820-1859, dansk forfatter og politiker. I det forholdsvis lille forfatterskab står værket "Phantasterne" (1857) frem som hovedværket – den første "liberalistiske roman" i dansk litteratur og en af frontløberen i en litterær strømning ved det 19. århundredes midte. Et gennembrud i forståelsen af værket blev opnået ved at betragte det i lyset af den politisk engagerede forfatters liberalistiske idealer, som han havde fremlagt dem i sine ikke-litterære meningstilkendegivelser.
