Hän työskenteli toimittajana Uudessa Oulussa ja kaunokirjallisuutta julkaisevassa Nyyrikissä, mutta jäi päätoimiseksi kirjailijaksi vuonna 1978. Kurvinen sai Valtion kirjallisuuspalkinnon kolmesti.
