El 11 de julio de 2012 el Congreso colombiano expidió la Ley 1562 que modificó el Sistema General de Riesgos Profesionales y dictó algunas normas en salud ocupacional. La nueva ley cambió la denominación de los riesgos para estar en concordancia con lo establecido por el Convenio 187 de 2006 de la OIT y, así mismo modificó el término de prescripción de las prestaciones económicas del Sistema, amplió la definición de accidente de trabajo, mejoró el concepto y aplicación de la relación de causalidad de las enfermedades laborales, amplió los grupos de trabajadores afiliados al Sistema, tanto en forma obligatoria como voluntaria, y los objetivos del Fondo de Riesgos Laborales, entre otras innovaciones.
