Jan Sonnergaard bragede i 1997 igennem med novellesamlingen Radiator og blev straks omfavnet af læsere og medier for sit hårdtslående sprog, socialrealistiske univers og sin udtalte samfundskritik. Sonnergaard var intellektuel, vidende, sød og generøs, men han var også en masse andet og mindre flatterende. Hans barndom var indimellem forfærdelig, hans forfatterskab overraskende selvbiografisk, hans hævnlyst lige så stor som hans livsappetit. Han døde pludseligt i 2016, kun 53 år gammel. Hans mangeårige ven, forfatteren Kristian Himmelstrup, tegner i Søde Jan et nuanceret portræt af en mangefacetteret mand og hans forfatterskab.
