Matt Latham, foreign correspondent and part-time spy for Australia's Secret Intelligence Service, arrives in Dallas to ghostwrite the memoir of his friend Bryant Callahan, who is running for the US Senate. However, Latham soon begins to mistrust the man he once revered, discovering that the former ambassador had spent two mysterious years with the CIA. He also suspects Bryant of abusing his young Cuban wife, Aleja.

Adopted as a child, Aleja consoles herself with dreams of discovering her birth family and turns to Latham to assist her in the search. When Latham agrees to help, his decision puts him on a collision course with international spy agencies keen to ensure long-buried truths stay that way. As he seeks to find justice for the vengeful ghosts of the past, Latham must navigate an ever-more complex cascade of tragic events - while questioning the morality of his own choices.
