Description of the book
Aside from the huge stars that are front and centre, historically, Black contribution, involvement, and presence in the music industry has been erased. The legitimacy of Black art is constantly questioned, which has made this legacy intangible. Black music has always reflected and told the story of the times, from Steel Pulse's Handsworth Revolution to Dizzee Rascal's Boy in Da Corner, Black music can impart the language of resistance, sorrow and joy.
However, the broader backdrop is that, for people in the Black diaspora, what has been lost is incalculable. The erasure of names, the alteration of the facts and the restriction of progress has meant that the true scale and richness of Black cultural history has been warped.
From the executives, songwriters and producers behind the popular music titans of yesteryear to the label presidents, managers and stakeholders taking up space in the industry today, in Unheard, trailblazing music executive Komali Scott-Jones demonstrates that against all the odds, Black ingenuity, innovation and resilience has helped build a rich and vibrant musical legacy.
