Leo Vroman noemt Tineke zijn enige boek, de andere zijn verzamelingen. `Dat enige boek van mij, schreef ik in Osaka,  s avonds thuisgekomen van het havencorvee. Ik begon hiertoe bij het begin, op de titel na. Ongeveer tien procent van de tekst veranderde ik een- of tweemaal en ik overwoog ieder woord, of ten minste, ik zorgde letter voor letter het boek na te apen dat ik wilde schrijven en waarvan ik niet veel meer dan de titels der  hoofdstukken en de stijl kende. Het verhaal was min of meer een voorstelling van mijn jeugd, die ik kende, geleefd door Tineke, die ik ook kende; twee onderwerpen waarvan ik hield. Oorspronkelijk had ik Tineke onder de dunne naam Trihinde vermomd, maar toen het al af was heb ik deze sluier toch maar verwijderd en tegelijk een slimme titel bedacht: Tineke. Die kwam dus het laatst.
