Han blir mottagen på ett märkligt kyligt men artigt svenskt vis och skaffar sig så småningom en familj och ett hyggligt liv i Lund. Hans innersta önskan att bli en hyllad författare eller filmregissör vill aldrig förverkligas, trots hans ansträngningar. Långt senare försöker hans son skriva honom till liv igen. Genom en komplex väv av perspektiv skildrar han hur Simos drömmar och förhoppningar landar i en relativt trygg men inte särskilt lycklig tillvaro.
