Tijdens een treinreis in 1985 vanuit haar toenmalige woonplaats in Noord-Frankrijk naar Nederland ziet de schrijfster in het voorbijrijden een eenzame boogschutter in een Frans woud en later een aangeschoten zwaan in een weiland bij Leiden.`Tussen hem en de dode zwaan bestond een verband, buiten de gewone orde der dingen.  Precies zoals haar verbeelding op gang komt bij het verbinden van deze beelden, vormt haar familieverleden de opmaat voor een fictief verhaal. De zwanen, de raadselachtige gidsen, leiden ons van de autobiografische aantekeningen over twee dominerende grootmoeders en haar naar Australië geëmigreerde broer, naar het rijk van de verbeelding.<br><br>Hella S. Ik schrijf dat niet op omdat ik zo graag wil dat iedereen dat weet, maar om te laten zien welke kernelementen in mijn verbeeldingen altijd weer een rol spelen.
