The Burning God
Buchbeschreibung
The exciting end to The Poppy War trilogy, R.F. Kuang's acclaimed, award-winning epic fantasy that combines the history of 20th-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters, to devastating, enthralling effect.
After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead.
Despite her losses, Rin hasn’t given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much – the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home. Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges – and unexpected opportunities. While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation.
Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners.
As her power and influence grows, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix’s voice, urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

This was the first time when I hated and loved the main character at the same time. You can truly tell that she was written by a woman. Perfect ending as well!

Brilliant and heartbreaking! Prob my fav use of the fantasy genre to create a metaphor for society. In this trilogy, the metaphor is thinly veiled. I would venture to say that the fantasy element is secondary to the rest of the plot. It’s still gorgeously done and incorporated into the story. I love learning about different religions and their roles in social anthropology which this book definitely touches on. The characters’ motivations and emotions are gorgeously conveyed. I think there’s only one whose character I cannot fault, and even then, this is because he’s written from the perspective of smn who loves him. Kuang makes these characters feel real by perfectly understanding the impacts their experiences would have! As with Babel, this trilogy reflects on many facets of society. IT’S NOT purely an entertainment or average fantasy read. Don’t go in with that expectation! This trilogy deserves recognition for being far more complex than an average BookTok characterisation ❤️❤️

Amazing Series
The first book is still my favorite but book three has a few very powerful scenes that I'll cherish forever. I loved the school setting and the grim dark fantasy elements in book one, but boy this story got even darker from book to book. The last book especially felt bittersweet from first to last page! What a trip!!!

To each its own of course but I felt like I have been mislead by the first book. The story of a hardworking and unique minded girl who learns and discovers more of her abilities each day. We meet many characters that we learn to love or hate. The author invites us to a world that can change, maybe even start anew. Then there is book 2, a different mindset, the middle part leading to a resolve. Book 3 is nothingness. It’s empty of sense and robbed me of and kind of ending. This world, the author created, is rich in folklore, in character, in legends but the story itself left me empty, I didn’t feel anything.
