Hans roman "Augustus" beskriver i brevform hur Rom gick från våld och kaos till fred och relativt lugn under Augustus regeringstid. Det är ett porträtt som inte saknar skuggor, men som ger en bild av en människa, tecknat både med fantasi och lågmäld förståelse. John Williams (1922–1994) arbetade som universitetslärare vid universitetet i Denver i trettio år, där han bland annat förestod kursen i skapande skrivande. Det är inte varje år man läser en bok som är så perfekt genomförd att man själv nästan försvinner, glömmer sin omgivning … Butcher’s Crossing är en sådan bok. NRC Handelsblad Kärv och obarmhärtig, men samtidigt dämpad i tonen, banade den väg för Cormac McCarthy.
