One of the key works of world philosophy, Plato’s The Republic sets out to consider the principles behind an ideal city state. This is the first audio recording of Plato’s great classic in a new translation by the Greek scholar Tom Griffith. No sooner than Bruce Alexander had left the studio having recorded Thomas Hardy, he was back at his Oxfordshire home studying hard for the next Naxos AudioBooks project Plato’s The Republic. ‘There couldn’t have been a greater contrast – the deeply emotional Hardy, and the rationalist character of Socrates,’ admitted Bruce Alexander. And both are about as far away possible from the character for which he is probably best known, Superintendent Mullett in the British TV series A Touch of Frost. ‘That is what being an actor is all about,’ declared Alexander. ‘The worst thing for us is when are typecast, which can happen so easily.’ Fortunately, this happens less the Audiobook/radio medium than on or film where visual concerns can be paramount.’ This recording of The Republic uses the new translation by Tom Griffith, who prepared it for Cambridge University Press. It will be released by CUP in the near future, but is ‘previewed’ by this abridgement made by the translator himself. ‘I started translating because I found that when I was teaching, and read from existing translations, I could see the interest fade from my pupils’ eyes, explained Griffith. ‘But I know this can capture the imagination and thoughts of young people, and so I started translating passages in language which was as contemporary as the original would have been in the fifth century B. Socratic dialogue, written by Plato around 380 BC, concerning the definition of justice (δικαιοσύνη), the order and character of the just city-state and the just man—for this reason, ancient readers used the name On Justice as an alternative title (not to be confused with the spurious dialogue also titled On Justice). The dramatic date of the dialogue has been much debated and though it might have taken place some time during the Peloponnesian War, "there would be jarring anachronisms if any of the candidate specific dates between 432 and 404 were assigned". Plato's best-known work, it has proven to be one of the world's most influential works of philosophy and political theory, both intellectually and historically. In it, Socrates along with various Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice and examine whether or not the just man is happier than the unjust man by considering a series of different cities coming into existence "in speech", culminating in a city called Kallipolis, which is ruled by philosopher-kings; and by examining the nature of existing regimes. ( newly updated TOC ) The Harvard Universal Classics, originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf, is a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot and first published in 1909. Eliot had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. (Originally he had said a three-foot shelf.) The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity and challenged Eliot to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works, and the Harvard Classics was the result. Eliot worked for one year with William A. Neilson, a professor of English; Eliot determined the works to be included and Neilson selected the specific editions and wrote introductory notes. Each volume had 400–450 pages, and the included texts are "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies." The collection was widely advertised by Collier and Son, in Collier's and elsewhere, with great success. Eight years later Eliot added a further 20 volumes as a sub-collection titled 'The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction', offering some of the greatest novels and short stories of world literature. The Allegory of the Cave

An excellent introduction to Plato's philosophy. If you're interested in the historical figure of Socrates, these dialogues are most are most concerned with his life. Philosophically, these "Dialogues"-- Charmides, Lysis, Lanches, Protagoras, Cratylus, ion--along with Phaedrus, Symposium and the Republic form the bulk of Plato's thought on Forms and the soul. This is a great place to start. The Euthyphro is a typical early dialogue and sets the stage for the charges that face later Socrates in the Apology. Both are very readable. Crito and Phaedo show Socrates in prison accepting his fate with poise and refusing to escape. They are also the most vivid explanation of the immortality of the soul. Meno is a middle dialogue that poses important problems of knowledge and learning resolved by the theory of Forms and Recollection. It's also the most difficult and rewarding of the bunch. The margins and book design are nice and readable for such a compact book. The main advantage this little 6x9 book has is that it's cheap, easy to carry, and perfect for writing in. The Dialogues of Plato (Translated)

Critias, one of Plato's late dialogues, recounts the story of the mighty island kingdom Atlantis and its attempt to conquer Athens, which failed due to the ordered society of the Athenians. Critias is the second of a projected trilogy of dialogues, preceded by Timaeus and followed by Hermocrates. The latter was possibly never written and Critias was left incomplete. Critias

The Laches, which is part of the fifth tetralogy with Carmide, Teage and Liside, is a dialogue of Plato centered on the theme of virtue. It is an areteical dialogue (that is, focusing on virtue), definitory (which seeks to define what it is, in its entirety or in part) and aporetic, that is, in which no definitive conclusion can be reached. It is also a typical apologetic dialogue, in which Plato tends to represent Socrates as full of virtue (here he is called brave, by the word of Lachete himself) to fight the pamphlets that turned after his death. From this a theory will emerge to justify its aporeticity: it would have been written (like the other aporetic dialogues) only to exalt the virtues of Socrates.

Symposium

"Laches" is a philosophical dialogue by Plato that explores the nature of courage and the role of education in developing moral virtue. The dialogue takes place between Socrates and two generals, Laches and Nicias, who are both renowned for their military expertise. Socrates begins by questioning Laches and Nicias about their understanding of courage. They both agree that courage involves endurance in the face of danger, but they struggle to define it more precisely. Phaedo

"Ion" is a dialogue by Plato that explores the nature of artistic inspiration and the role of the artist in society. The main character, Ion, is a rhapsode who specializes in reciting epic poetry by Homer. Socrates engages Ion in a conversation, and the discussion unfolds as Socrates questions Ion about the source of his ability to recite poetry. Socrates argues that Ion's talent is not the result of his own knowledge or expertise, but rather a divine inspiration. He compares Ion to a magnetic ring that is capable of attracting and transmitting the power of the gods through his recitation. Socrates also points out that Ion's expertise is limited only to the works of Homer, and he has no real knowledge of the subjects he is reciting about. Read in English, unabridged.

"Lysis" is a dialogue by Plato that explores the nature of friendship and the qualities that make it valuable. The dialogue is named after the main character, a young boy named Lysis, and is narrated by Socrates. Socrates encounters Lysis and his friend Menexenus, and begins to question them about the nature of their friendship. Lysis and Menexenus struggle to define what makes their friendship valuable, and Socrates suggests that perhaps they are not true friends if they cannot articulate why they enjoy each other's company. Lysis

Lesser Hippias is thought to be one of Plato's early works. Socrates matches wits with an arrogant polymath, who is also a smug literary critic. Hippias believes that Homer can be taken at face value, and he also thinks that Achilles may be believed when he says he hates liars, whereas Odysseus' resourceful (πολύτροπος) behavior stems from his ability to lie well (365b). Socrates argues that Achilles is a cunning liar who throws people off the scent of his own deceptions and that cunning liars are actually the "best" liars. Consequently, Odysseus was equally false and true and so was Achilles (369b). Socrates proposes, possibly for the sheer dialectical fun of it, that it is better to do evil voluntarily than involuntarily. His case rests largely on the analogy with athletic skills, such as running and wrestling. He says that a runner or wrestler who deliberately sandbags is better than the one who plods along because he can do no better. Lesser Hippias

"Menexenus" is a dialogue written by Plato in which Socrates delivers a funeral oration in honor of Athenian soldiers who have died in battle. The dialogue takes place between Socrates and Menexenus, a young man who has just returned from the funeral of his own father. In his oration, Socrates uses the occasion to criticize the way in which Athenian leaders often exploit the deaths of soldiers for their own political gain. He argues that true patriotism and heroism are not based on fame or glory, but on the love of one's country and fellow citizens. Hippias of Elis travels throughout the Greek world practicing and teaching the art of making beautiful speeches. On a rare visit to Athens, he meets Socrates, who questions him about the nature of his art. Socrates is especially curious about how Hippias would define beauty. They agree that beauty makes all beautiful things beautiful, but when Socrates presses him to say precisely what he means, Hippias is unable to deliver such a definition. The more Socrates probes, the more absurd the responses from Hippias become. The Allegory of the Cave appears in Plato’s Republic and compares the effect of education and the lack of it on human nature. It is written as a dialogue between Plato's brother and Socrates, who tells of people that have been chained to the wall of a cave their whole lives. The Apology (of Socrates) is Plato's version of the speech given by Socrates as he defends himself against the charges of being a man "who corrupted the young, did not believe in the gods, and created new deities". "Apology" here has its earlier meaning (now usually expressed by the word "apologia") of speaking in defense of a cause or of one's beliefs or actions

"Crito" is a philosophical dialogue between Socrates and his friend Crito, taking place in Socrates' prison cell in Athens. Socrates has been sentenced to death for allegedly corrupting the youth of Athens and impiety, and the dialogue takes place in the hours leading up to his execution. Crito has come to persuade Socrates to escape from prison and flee Athens, but Socrates refuses, arguing that he must obey the laws of Athens, even if they are unjust. Socrates believes that he has a moral obligation to obey the laws, since he has lived in Athens and benefited from its laws for his entire life. Crito

Euthyphro (395 BC) by Plato, is a Socratic dialogue whose events occur in the weeks before the trial of Socrates (399 BC), between Socrates and Euthyphro. The dialogue covers subjects such as the meaning of piety and justice. Plato (428/427 or 424/423 – 348/347 BC) was a philosopher in Classical Greece and the founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Socrates was a classical Greek (Athenian) philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, and as being the first moral philosopher, of the Western ethical tradition of thought. The Apology of Socrates, written by Plato, is a Socratic dialogue of the speech of legal self-defence which Socrates spoke at his trial for impiety and corruption in 399 BC Specifically, the Apology of Socrates is a defence against the charges of "corrupting the youth" and "not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other daimonia that are novel" to Athens. Among the primary sources about the trial and death of the philosopher Socrates (469–399 BC), the Apology of Socrates is the dialogue that depicts the trial, and is one of four Socratic dialogues, along with Euthyphro, Phaedo, and Crito, through which Plato details the final days of the philosopher Socrates.

The Apology of Socrates According to Plato

Phædo or Phaedo (Greek: Φαίδων, Phaidōn), also known to ancient readers as On The Soul, is one of the best-known dialogues of Plato's middle period, along with the Republic and the Symposium. The philosophical subject of the dialogue is the immortality of the soul. It is set in the last hours prior to the death of Socrates, and is Plato's fourth and last dialogue to detail the philosopher's final days, following Euthyphro, Apology, and Crito.  One of the main themes in the Phaedo is the idea that the soul is immortal. In the dialogue, Socrates discusses the nature of the afterlife on his last day before being executed by drinking hemlock. Socrates has been imprisoned and sentenced to death by an Athenian jury for not believing in the gods of the state (though some scholars think it was more for his support of "philosopher kings" as opposed to democracy) and for corrupting the youth of the city.  By engaging in dialectic with a group of Socrates' friends, including the two Thebans, Cebes, and Simmias, Socrates explores various arguments for the soul's immortality in order to show that there is an afterlife in which the soul will dwell following death. Phaedo tells the story that following the discussion, he and the others were there to witness the death of Socrates.  The Phaedo was first translated into Latin from Greek by Henry Aristippus in 1160. Today, it is generally considered one of Plato's great works.
