From the author of When God was a Rabbit and Tin Man, Still Life is a big-hearted story of the families we forge and the friendships that make us.
1944, Italy. As bombs fall around them, two strangers meet in the ruined wine cellar of a Tuscan villa and share an extraordinary evening.
Ulysses Temper is a young British soldier, Evelyn Skinner a 64-year-old art historian living life on her own terms. She has come to salvage paintings from the wreckage of war and relive memories of her youth when her heart was stolen by an Italian maid in a particular room with a view. Ulysses’ chance encounter with Evelyn will transform his life – and all those who love him back home in London – forever.
Uplifting, sweeping and full of unforgettable characters, Still Life is a novel about beauty, love, family and friendship.

This beautiful novel moved me to tears.A must-read
The power of Sarah’s words brings life to the unknown places she mentions through the book. I feel like I could see the places and hear the people, so vivid and alive!
I laughed, cried and hoped and in the end the story was perfect.
Now I need to go to Florence and experience all that Evelyn, Ulysses and their family exquisitely described 💕

- I enjoyed every second of this beautiful book. I laughed, I cried, both multiple times. The narration was perfect and brought the characters to life so well. This will stay with me for a long time.

- Absolute delight of a book. A little slow to start but by half way I was pacing myself so it wouldn't end too soon. I'm heartbroken to have lost the friends I found in Florence, and even more determined to visit the city that was painted so well in my mind. The narration was simply perfect, not often the case when authors narrate their own work!Book★

- Life. Love. Loss. Art. Literature. The pain of family and the joy of friendships. A rowdy London pub and Florence bathed in shimmering light. A cast of characters so different and so intertwined, pulled apart and drawn back together. A story spanning most of the 20th century. All beautifully narrated, with subtly dramatised voices - just enough to help you follow, without irritating or intruding on your own experience. You can’t stop listening and you don’t want it to end.
