In 1912, she married Leonard Woolf, and in 1917, the couple founded the Hogarth Press, which published much of her work. They rented a home in Sussex and moved there permanently in 1940. Woolf had romantic relationships with women, including Vita Sackville-West, who also published her books through Hogarth Press. Und als das »wunderlichste« ihrer »Abenteuer« bei seinem Erscheinen im März 1937 von der Presse als ein Meisterwerk gefeiert wird und wochenlang an der Spitze der bestgehenden Titel der ›Herald Tribune‹ steht, notiert sie erleichtert und stolz: »Es wurden 25 000 Exemplare verkauft - bei weitem mein Rekord.« Dieser Erfolg mag nicht zuletzt auf die bei Virginia Woolf überraschende, auf den ersten Blick fast konventionelle Erzählweise zurückzuführen sein, auf den konkreten chronologischen Handlungsablauf eines Generationsromans zwischen 1880 und den dreißiger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Buch ist, schreibt sie, »natürlich verschieden von den andern: hat, glaube ich, mehr ›wirkliches‹ Leben in sich...« Dieses ›wirkliche Leben‹ verkörpert die Londoner Offiziersfamilie Pargiter, bestehend aus den Eltern, Kindern und Enkeln. Zunächst leben sie noch alle zusammen auf dem alten Familienbesitz ›Abercorn‹, die todkranke Mutter und der Oberst mit seinem schmuddligen Geheimnis von der kleinen Mätresse, die drei Söhne und die vier Töchter. Feste werden gefeiert und Liebschaften geknüpft. Aber die Tage, Wochen und Jahre vergehen und führen unabänderlich jeden seinem eigenen individuellen Schicksal entgegen, führen zu Ehen, Geburt und Tod, zu Glück, Geselligkeit und Einsamkeit. Und doch hat Virginia Woolf, »die Dichterin des fließenden Erlebens, des Bewußtseinsstroms«, die Zeit angehalten durch das Immerwiederkehren gleicher Augenblicke.
