She is accepted into the quiet and remote country house of an uncle, who has almost completely withdrawn into himself after the death of his wife. One day he got acquainted with Doctor Dolittle, and after that his dreams began to come true; for that kindly little man promised to teach him all he knew about animals and their languages, and to take him along on his next voyage of discovery. They decided where to go by opening the atlas with their eyes shut and touching the page with a pencil. All in all it was perhaps the most amazing voyage that has ever been heard of. The excitement began with four stowaways (one of them the cat's-meat-man!); then came the Doctor's discovery of the key to the language of the shellfish, through his meeting with a Fidgit. After that, events crowd thick and fast: the stop at a Spanish island where the Doctor creates a sensation as matador at a bullfight; the shipwreck; the landing on a Floating Island; and all the adventures there till the Doctor is crowned king by the devoted natives and has to be got away home to Puddleby by stealth. The Big Time is a science fiction novel by Fritz Leiber published in 1958. It was awarded the Hugo Award during 1958. The Big Time is a story involving only a few characters, but with a vast, cosmic back story. The storyline features members of one of two factions, both capable of time travel, engaged in a long-term conflict called "The Change War". Their method of battle involves changing the outcomes of events throughout history (temporal war). The two opposing groups are nicknamed the Spiders and the Snakes after their respective sponsors. The true forms or identities of the Spiders and the Snakes, how those nicknames were chosen, or whether they are in any way descriptive are all unknown. ”You can't know there's a war on—for the Snakes coil and Spiders weave to keep you from knowing it's being fought over your live and dead body!” Algis Budrys praised The Big Time as evidence that Leiber was the only science fiction writer of his generation "who as a matter of course and conviction saw through the mores and circumstances which are now proving nonviable not only in commercial literature but in what we can call life as well." In 2012, it was selected for inclusion in the Library of America's two-volume compilation American Science Fiction: Nine Classic Novels of the 1950s. When Roberta, Peter and Phyllis’ dad is suddenly and unexpectedly sent to prison, the children are suddenly pulled away from their comfortable suburban life. They move with their mother to the "Three Chimneys," a countryside house that sits near the railway. As the children settle into their new life, the railway allows them to meet and befriend a series of characters, some of whom need their help, and some whom might just be able to help them. First published in 1905 as a serial, "The Railway Children" has been popular with readers from its beginning. It has been adapted to the screen and the stage several times, and remain a children’s favourite to this day. Edith Nesbit Bland (1858-1924) was a British author, activist and poet, who published an extensive amount of children’s books under the pen name "E. Nesbit", which are still widely read today. Amongst her most famous novels are "The Railway Children," "The Story of the Treasure Seekers," and "Five Children and It".

Beowulf by Unknown Audiobook is an Old English epic poem in the tradition of Germanic heroic legend consisting of 3,182 alliterative lines. It is one of the most important and most often translated works of Old English literature. The date of composition is a matter of contention among scholars; the only certain dating is for the manuscript, which was produced between 975 and 1025 Summary: The protagonist Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, comes to the aid of Hrothgar, king of the Danes, whose great hall, Heorot, is plagued by the monster Grendel. Beowulf kills Grendel with his bare hands, then kills Grendel's mother with a giant's sword that he found in her lair. Later in his life, Beowulf becomes king of the Geats, and finds his realm terrorized by a dragon, some of whose treasure had been stolen from his hoard in a burial mound. He attacks the dragon with the help of his thegns or servants, but they do not succeed. Beowulf decides to follow the dragon to its lair at Earnanæs, but only his young Swedish relative Wiglaf, whose name means "remnant of valour",[a] dares to join him. Beowulf finally slays the dragon, but is mortally wounded in the struggle. He is cremated and a burial mound by the sea is erected in his honour. Beowulf is considered an epic poem in that the main character is a hero who travels great distances to prove his strength at impossible odds against supernatural demons and beasts. The poem begins in medias res or simply, "in the middle of things", a characteristic of the epics of antiquity. Although the poem begins with Beowulf's arrival, Grendel's attacks have been ongoing. An elaborate history of characters and their lineages is spoken of, as well as their interactions with each other, debts owed and repaid, and deeds of valour. The warriors form a brotherhood linked by loyalty to their lord. The poem begins and ends with funerals: at the beginning of the poem for Scyld Scefing and at the end for Beowulf. The poem is tightly structured. E. Carrigan shows the symmetry of its design in a model of its major components, with for instance the account of the killing of Grendel matching that of the killing of the dragon, the glory of the Danes matching the accounts of the Danish and Geatish courts.

Susan Coolidge (1835-1905) was an American children‘s‘ book author, best known for her novel `What Katy Did‘ (1872), which was inspired by her own childhood. She started writing after working as a nurse during the American Civil War.
