The story of Ethan Frome had initially begun as a French-language composition that Wharton had to write while studying the language in Paris, but several years later she took the story up again and transformed it into the novel it now is, basing her sense of New England culture and place on her ten years of living at The Mount, her home in Lenox, Massachusetts. She would read portions of her novel-in-progress each day to her good friend Walter Berry, who was an international lawyer. Wharton likely based the story of Ethan and Mattie's sledding experience on an accident that she had heard about in 1904 in Lenox, Massachusetts. Troy Belknap, is a wealthy American whose family is enjoying their annual summer visit to France when the Germans invade. Troy's tutor and close friend M. Grantier leaves for his hometown when news spreads of the German invasion. Troy's father, Mr. Belknap, secures space on a ship to the United States, but they are unable to make the voyage when Mrs. Belknap becomes sick with pneumonia. Mr. Belknap leaves Mrs. Belknap and Troy behind with the plans that they will depart in another a month. Incensed that his beloved France is being destroyed, Troy is agitated by the fleeing American travelers and their aristocratic sense that the war is merely background noise: a topic to discuss at dinner and send monetary support. Edith Wharton composed The Glimpses of the Moon after the end of World War I. She describes the postwar era in A Backward Glance, her autobiography, as a time when she faced the growing sense of the waste and loss wrought by the war's]irreparable years. The emotional landscape was one of bereavement: Death and mourning darkened the houses of all my friends, and I mourned with them, and mingled my private grief with the general sorrow. The Mother’s Recompense

Twilight Sleep portrays the self-absorption of the upper class Pauline Manford and her extended family in 1920's New York. Pauline fills every moment of her day with "mental uplift [. . .] Psycho-analysis [. . .] Silent Meditation [. . .] and Facial massage." She delivers a speech to the "Birth Control League" one week and the "National Mothers' Day Association" the next, seeing no hypocrisy in doing so. In her search for fulfillment, she turns to the panaceas offered by a guru called "the Mahatma" as well as the services of a quack psychoanalyst. A number of incidents (which this summary won't divulge) result from the suggestion that immoral activities may be taking place at "Dawnside," the Mahatma's retreat. This places Pauline, who has become an advocate of the Mahatma, in a delicate position because her husband (the wealthy lawyer Dexter Manford) is investigating the charges of impropriety. Pauline, however, manipulates the situation so that it is in the best interests of the family for Dexter to drop his investigation. Edith Wharton's hapless protagonist Martin Boyne laments that he never meets an interesting person while travelling. As he begins his voyage across the Atlantic, however, he meets not one interesting person, but seven: seven children travelling-escaping rather-under the protection of the eldest sister, Judith Wheater, and their sturdy nanny, Miss Horatia Scope ("Scopy"). They are escaping their parents, who happen to be old acquaintances of Boyne's. He fears at first that Judy is his college chum's second wife and watches in horror as she mothers the youngest children: "Lord-the child's ever so much too heavy for her. Must have been married out of the nursery: damned cad, not to-." He soon understands his mistake, but by the time the ship docks in France his morbid curiosity about the Wheater party has led him into the maze of their private arrangements. The Gods Arrive continues the story of Vance Weston and Halo Spear Tarrant of Hudson River Bracketed. At the end of Hudson River Bracketed, Vance's wife Laura Lou has died and Halo, although married to the aristocratic Lewis Tarrant, acknowledges her feelings for Vance. In The Gods Arrive, Tarrant refuses to give Halo a divorce. Halo, however, has just inherited from her relative, Elinor Lorburn, the Hudson River Bracketed house called the Willows, along with an independent income. Halo and Vance--who has just published a successful novel--are thus financially enabled to travel to Europe together. Leaving behind the hypocrisy and hollowness of New York publishers and Greenwich Village artists, they live together in France and Spain, but the question arises: have they deserted one hypocritical artistic community for the one where they live for a time in Paris?
