The Empire of Gold
Description of book
The final chapter in the bestselling, critically acclaimed Daevabad Trilogy, in which a con-woman and an idealistic djinn prince join forces to save a magical kingdom from a devastating civil war.
Daevabad has fallen.
After a brutal conquest stripped the city of its magic, Nahid leader Banu Manizheh and her resurrected commander, Dara, must try to repair their fraying alliance and stabilize a fractious, warring people.
But the death of his people and loss of his beloved Nahri have unleashed the worst demons of Dara’s dark past. To vanquish them, he must face some ugly truths about his history and put himself at the mercy of those he once considered enemies.
Having narrowly escaped their murderous families and Daevabad’s deadly politics, Nahri and Ali, now safe in Cairo, face difficult choices of their own. Though Nahri is finding peace in the rhythms of her old home, she is haunted by the knowledge that the loved ones she left behind and the people who considered her a savior, are at the mercy of a new tyrant.
Ali, too, cannot help but look back, and is determined to return to rescue his city and the family that remains.
As peace grows more elusive and old players return, Nahri, Ali, and Dara come to understand that in order to remake the world, they may need to fight those they once loved…and take a stand for those they once hurt.

The perfect closing to a fantastic trilogy, An Empire of Gold was gripping and at times incredibly dark, though never to the point of being gratuitous or unbelievable. If anything, against the stark contrast of war forcing the characters to make difficult choices, it were some of the moments of levity or goodness that could've come across as a little unbelievable (they weren't, they were grounded in reality and presented as logical effects of the characters' actions). S. A. Chakraborty also managed to accomplish something which I didn't think possible: convince me to get on board with a character whom I wasn't that keen on for the entire series through compassion. Big props for that. I wish the author a wonderful career writing more because her skill in this trilogy has only grown and I would love to one day read a new story by her.I recommend

- Loved it! What an incredible story. I love how the characters are so real and human in their motivations, their mistakes and their actions. Really strong and coherent character building.

- A beautiful conclusion to a thoughtful, sprawling epic! Love the way the author analyzes the cruelties of monarchy and absolute rule—and no less weight/sensitivity is given to the characters’ inner lives, motivations, and relationships. Dara’s story is probably one of the most memorable, insightful arcs I’ve read in a long time. (Would be amazing if there were a whole other series about the rest of his arc!)
