Ardua missione, per un terapeuta, cercare di strappare i brandelli di un'anima lacerata alle spire di una mente tanto vorace: nella danza di parole che i due ingaggiano, a ogni passo del medico corrisponde un nuovo imprendibile exploit della paziente, intriso di beckettiana ironia e puntellato di autorevoli teorie. Grothendieck e Gödel, Maxwell e Feynman. Kant, Schopenhauer e Wittgenstein. Bach. Il sapere moderno distillato in un lasciapassare per il nichilismo. Nel parterre di riferimenti di Alicia un solo nome compare con sospetta parsimonia, ed è quello di suo fratello Bobby, lasciato in coma in Italia dopo un incidente automobilistico, e dato per morto. Di Bobby Alicia non vuole parlare. Ed è proprio in quell'eloquente silenzio che lo psichiatra incunea il suo grimaldello. Perché ora sa che solo di Bobby, solo a Bobby, Alicia vorrebbe parlare. Seduta dopo seduta, il tempo a disposizione si fa sempre piú breve. Il passeggero

Nel Texas di oggi, lungo il confine con il Messico, si incrociano i destini di tre uomini. Uno di loro sta fuggendo con una borsa piena di soldi, gli altri due lo inseguono. Llewelyn Moss, un reduce del Vietnam, si è ritrovato sul luogo affollato di cadaveri di una battaglia fra narcotrafficanti e ha colto al volo un'occasione troppo grande per lui. Sulle sue tracce si muovono Anton Chigurh, un assassino psicopatico con una pericolosa filosofia della giustizia, e lo sceriffo Bell, un uomo del passato che non sa farsi una ragione della ferocia del presente. Il destino di Moss dipende da quale dei due inseguitori lo troverà per primo. Un romanzo crudo e implacabile come una premonizione di tragedia, che riporta il lettore in quei paesaggi del Sudest degli Stati Uniti dove i vecchi valori hanno ceduto il passo a una violenza cieca e incontrollata. Dove vivono uomini che, «se uno li ammazzasse tutti, toccherebbe costruire una dépendance dell'inferno».

Non è un paese per vecchi

Un uomo e un bambino viaggiano attraverso le rovine di un mondo ridotto a cenere in direzione dell'oceano, dove forse i raggi raffreddati di un sole ormai livido cederanno un po' di tepore e qualche barlume di vita. Trascinano con sé sulla strada tutto ciò che nel nuovo equilibrio delle cose ha ancora valore: un carrello del supermercato con quel po' di cibo che riescono a rimediare, un telo di plastica per ripararsi dalla pioggia gelida e una pistola con cui difendersi dalle bande di predoni che battono le strade decisi a sopravvivere a ogni costo. E poi il bene piú prezioso: se stessi e il loro reciproco amore. Nell'insuperabile creazione di McCarthy, la post-apocalisse assume il volto realistico di un padre e un figlio in viaggio su un groviglio di strade senza origine, dentro una natura ridotta a involucro asciutto, fra le vestigia paurosamente riconoscibili di un mondo svuotato e inutile.
