"Antigonos" foregår i det andet århundredes Grækenland. Den fortæller historien om en ung mand, som vakler mellem troen på de gamle græske guder og den nye kristendom. Hovedpersonen stammer fra en præstefamilie ved helligdommen i Delfi, men kærestesorger får ham til at kaste sig over den kristne teologi i stedet for at følge sin families tro. Det fromme liv efter de kristne dyder er imidlertid ikke nødvendigvis så meningsfuldt, som han havde håbet ... Bogen er skrevet i og med samtidens sprog og retskrivning. Karl Gjellerup (1857-1919) debuterede i 1878 som forfatter med "En idealist" og vandt i 1917 Nobelprisen i litteratur sammen med Henrik Pontoppidan. Karl Gjellerup skrev romaner og noveller og var ofte kritisk over for kristendommen og de gængse normer. Han var inspireret af Georg Brandes‘ litteraturkritik og blev selv en del af Det moderne gennembrud i dansk litteratur.
