I’ve never read Huckleberry Finn but I don’t think that affected my enjoyment of and appreciation for this retelling. It was of course dark and harrowing in places but also full of warmth and humour. The writing is beautiful, poetic and utterly gripping and Dominic Hoffman’s narration was the perfect match.

I cried. It was beautiful and tragic. More so that we know this happened … this IS history. The book was brilliant, beautiful and a must read for students and adults alike.

Wow! What a book and perfectly read by Dominic Hoffman. The Trees didn't fully do it for me but this one was amazing. It's in the spirit of the great American adventure novels but without turning a blind eye on the injustices and cruently surrounding it. Funny at times, harrowing at others but always captivating.
