Hochwürden selbst ist bäuerlicher Herkunft und wie es sich für den zweiten Sohn eines Bauern gehört, tritt er dann, nach erfolgtem Theologiestudium, das Priesteramt an. Da ihm die Vermittlung des Evangeliums an "seine Bauern" auf "Bauernart" wichtiger ist, als die bischöflichen Dekrete, dauert es nicht lange bis es zu Konflikten mit der Obrigkeit kommt.
