Death-Watch
Description of book
In the shadowy hallway of clockmaker Johannes Carver's house a policeman is found murdered, the arrow-tipped minute hand of a monumental antique clock embedded in his neck. For Dr Gideon Fell this is the only case that has ever really frightened him, and before he can solve it he must find answers to some seemingly impossible questions. Why was Calvin Boscombe standing near the corpse with a silencer on his gun? Who locked the attic door? And what has become of the sixteenth-century death-watch?

Sometimes John Dixon Carr‘s novels seem really rather too clever by half but I hugely enjoyed this tale. The explanation at the end seem somewhat fanciful but it’s worth reflecting that probably in real life people have swung for equally fanciful motivation. It seems presumptuous of me to rate Jonathan Keeble‘s narration, because he is so well-known and so rightly praised, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it was his narration that raised my enjoyment of this novel to above my usual ratings for this author. It’s so good that I’ve saved other books narrated by him to listen to.
