Ook na Tjsip liet Elsschot 'die kleine smeerlap van een kleinzoon' niet los. In 1940 verscheen het vervolg De Leeuwentemmer, een reeks brieven waarin Laarmans aan zijn zoon Walter schrijft over het opgroeien van Tsjip, het stuklopen van het huwelijk van Adèle en Bennek, hun strijd om het kind en de daaropvolgende 'ontvoering' uit Polen. In 1943 werden Tsjip en De Leeuwentemmer overeenkomstig Elsschots intentie voor het eerst in een gezamenlijke uitgave gepubliceerd. Kort daarop werd het boek met succes in Amerika uitgebracht, bedoeld voor de Nederlandse emigranten.<br>Deze editie is tot stand gekomen onder auspiciën van het Constantijn Huygens Instituut voor tekstedities en intellectuele geschiedenis van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen.
