De hoofdpersoon is leerling op het Montanelli-lyceum, dat is genoemd naar een negentiende-eeuwse liberale grondlegster. Als hij in verband wordt gebracht met de verdrinkingsdood van een zwakbegaafde jongen wordt hij van school gestuurd. In zijn verhaal tracht hij te bewijzen dat de dood van de jongen veeleer te wijten is aan de 'chique Amsterdam Zuid-buurt' waarin zij wonen, een omgeving waarin geld de maatstaf van alle dingen is geworden. Herman Koch beschrijft op indringende wijze het wel en wee van het fossiele lerarencorps met zijn valse opgewektheid en hypocriet geloof in het 'Montanellisysteem'. Dit luisterboek werd eerder uitgezonden in het VPRO-programma De Avonden op Radio 5 in november en december 1995.
