I enjoyed book 1 in the series, Shatter Me, despite it being slow to start. But this sequel definitely suffers from 'middle book syndrome'. It is slow and tedious, and the first half of the book is mostly the main character Juliette in "woe is me" mode, complaining about every opportunity she's been given and pining over a boy. The narration is also over-acted for my personal taste. The plot does then start to heat up as Mafi explores the dystopian world and it's political challenges, as well as developing the fantasy themes as well. At this point I began to enjoy the story. I once again lost interest towards the end when a ridiculous love triangle is introduced, in which Juliette seems able to forget her own kidnapping and trauma from book 1 in favour of some sexual tension. It felt crazy to me and was clearly used to create further drama which I didn't feel was necessary. Overall I was quite disappointed by this instalment, but I'm sticking with it hoping for a better book 3.
