Familjen Mulvaney på gården High Point i Mt. Ephraim norr om New York är en stor och blomstrande familj, vars medlemmar ser bra ut, är karismatiska och äger en stor framtidstro. Änkans bok är en sorgebok, en bok om att tappa fotfästet och försöka hitta det igen, men också en rörande skildring av ett nästan femtio år långt äktenskap. En morgon i februari 2008 kör Joyce Carol Oates efter en del övertalning sin make Raymond Smith till akuten.
