For She is Wrath
A sizzling lovers-to-enemies romantasy epic
Beskrivelse av boken
Sizzling with romantic tension and with a fiery heroine to root for, Emily Varga's debut For She is Wrath is the epic tale of a girl escaped from prison and hell-bent on revenge, and the boy she loved who put her there.
Betrayed by her ex-lover and falsely imprisoned for a crime she didn’t commit, Dania counts down the days until she can exact her revenge. When a fellow prisoner offers a chance at escape and the keys to a dangerous Jinn magic, Dania seizes the opportunity and, armed with a brand-new identity and all the power she could want, enacts a plan to bring down those who betrayed her and her family.
But the one person standing in her way is the very man who signed her life away in the first place, and retribution becomes a complicated game of cat and mouse. Because sometimes betrayal isn’t as simple as it seems and revenge certainly isn’t as easy – not when your heart is involved.
Prepare to be swept away in this epic and romantic gender-flipped retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo by debut author Emily Varga.

Not having read the original version of the story, I'm assuming the slight magical element is unique to this. I find it refreshing that while the plot did rely on the magic in a technical sense, it didn't consume the entire narrative. The characters motivations are interpersonal and they use magic as a tool within that. My only gripe (which I think is very much a me thing) is a pronunciation issue. When including the proper names for Asian items such as talwar, kurta, sherwani etc. these are pronounced with the correct accent but the rest of the narrative style is very neutral/RP. It was jarring and distracting when one word out of a sentence was delivered completely differently, I would much rather have had a less neutral pronunciation for the whole book.

For me I found MC to be quite unlikeable - though I can't put my finger on why. I enjoyed the infiltrating around the Palace but overall for me it was a slog to finish. The writing was really repetitive, constantly reminding me each chapter of her motivation and her emotions when they never changed? Also the twist at the end I just didn't find clever. Just my personal opinion, it was okay...

I enjoyed it, the characters are flat but they're likable and they all have a purpose in the story, so it didn't bothered me that much. Some parts were easy to predict but there was also some parts that surprised me. A bit of adventure, a bit of romance and a bit of magic.
